DAY TRIPS · NORDHORDLAND & THE COAST

Coastal day trips north of Bergen

Everyone drives east to the big fjords. Go north and west instead and you get lighthouses, fishing villages and empty roads – often within an hour. Our cars are picked up in Åsane on the north side of Bergen, so these trips start without any city traffic.

1. Fedje – the village in the ocean

Fedje is a small island far out in the North Sea, with a fishing harbour, coastal paths and big skies. Drive north on the E39 via Knarvik and follow Fv565 to the ferry quay at Sævrøy (73 km, about 1 h 20 min). The car ferry takes about 30 minutes and runs all year. On the island, walk part of the North Sea Trail, climb to the Vidnappen viewpoint and visit the local gin distillery. Best from April to September.

2. Øygarden – the North Sea coast

The long chain of islands west of Bergen is about an hour’s drive to the outermost point. Birdwatchers have recorded 236 species here. Visit the North Sea Traffic Museum and the tunnels of Fjell Festning, a fortress built during the German occupation. Note: the new Sotra road link is delayed, so expect queues on the old Sotra Bridge in rush hour.

3. Osterøy – hairpins and farm museums

Osterøy is about 30 minutes from Bergen. Drive the Kossdalsvingane road with its 17 hairpin bends, hike up Bruviknipa (822 m), and visit Osterøy Museum and the old Havrå farm. A perfect half-day with the automatic – no clutch work on the hairpins.

4. Modalen and Mostraumen

About 1 h 25 min from Bergen, Modalen sits at the end of a narrow fjord. The rock wall known as Slottet rises about 200 m above the Mofjord, and Modalen is a gateway to the Stølsheimen mountains. Fjord boats run through the narrow Mostraumen strait in summer.

Good to know

  • The coast is often windy and the weather changes fast. Bring a windproof jacket even in summer.
  • Ferries are billed automatically via the car, like tolls.
  • These trips are all well under 250 km, the daily allowance for our Toyota.
