Trolltunga from Bergen by car
Trolltunga is one of Norway’s most famous hikes – and one of the hardest to reach without a car. Here is how to plan the drive, where to park and why you should not try it as a day trip from Bergen.
The drive
Odda, the town below Trolltunga, is about 3 hours from Bergen. The most scenic route goes along the Hardangerfjord via Norheimsund and the Tørvikbygd–Jondal ferry, or over the Hardanger Bridge via Voss. Both are open all year.
Season: June to September
According to the official Trolltunga site, you can hike on your own from 1 June to 30 September. From October to May the trail is usually covered in snow and a guided hike is recommended. The hike is long and demanding, so start early and bring proper boots, food, water and warm clothes.
Parking: P1, P2 or P3?
| Car park | Price (one day) | Hike (return) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1 Tyssedal | 330 kr | 38 km, about 15 h | Open all year |
| P2 Skjeggedal | 550 kr | 27 km, 8–12 h | Most popular start |
| P3 Mågelitopp | 600 kr + 220 kr road toll | 20 km, 7–10 h | 8 June – 30 Sept 2026, pre-booking required in high season, entry 06:30–11:00, max height 2 m |
Both our cars are under 2 m tall, so they fit the P3 height limit. Campervans and vehicles over 5.2 m must use P1. The road between P1 and P2 is closed at night (21:00–06:00) for rockslide work, so plan your arrival and departure around it.
Why not a day trip?
Six hours of driving plus a 7–12 hour hike is more than most people can do safely in one day. Stay one or two nights in Odda or Tyssedal: drive on day one, hike early on day two, and drive back on day three (or along the fjord via Hardanger on the way home).
A realistic 3-day plan
- Day 1: Bergen → Norheimsund (Steinsdalsfossen) → ferry → Utne → Odda. Early night.
- Day 2: Arrive at P2 or P3 by 07:00. Hike to Trolltunga and back. Dinner in Odda.
- Day 3: Odda → Hardanger Bridge → Vøringsfossen (summer) → Voss → Bergen.
That is roughly 450–500 km in total. A 3-day rental of our Toyota includes 750 km, so there is plenty of margin.
Packing list for the car
- Head torch – you may finish the hike in the dark late in the season.
- Dry clothes and shoes to change into after the hike.
- Snacks and water for the drive – shops in small villages close early.
